ST.FRANCIS BASILICA
Location:
Alsina with Defensa Street – Montserrat
The
temple stands on the same plot given by Juan de Garay to the Franciscan
Order in 1580, next to Saint Roque’s Chapel and the Convent.
This
church opened in 1754; construction had begun in 1730 designed by Andrés
Blanqui. The towers and façade crumbled down in 1807 and Uruguayan
architecture Tomás Toribio was in charge in rebuilding. There was
further modification in 1911 when architect Ernesto Sackmann gave the
façade a German baroque style with and image of St. Francis at the top
of the tympanum.
There
are two more statues crowning the front one of C. Colon and the other
Dante Alighieri.
