ST. JOHN BAPTIST ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL
Location:
225, Bolivar St. – Monserrat
This
the oldest non-Catholic temple in the country, a historical example of
religious diversity in Buenos Aires and the freedom of worship law
passed by Bernardino Rivadavia in 1830.
Declared National Historical Monument in 2000. It was built on the
grounds of the Our Lady of Mercy old cemetery. The Anglican community
was being organized as from 1825 and started construction of this church
in 1831.
Today’s worshippers are not only British but also tourists and the
elderly. The church has relations with the Church of England but it is
not under its jurisdiction. There is a special service once a year to
honour those who fought in the First World War.
