The obelisk shows a historical local event on each one of its faces:
the city first foundation in 1536, the second and definitive one of
1580, the first time the national flag was hoisted in 1812 (in St.
Nicholas Church which formerly occupied the space where the obelisk
stands today and the establishing of Buenos Aires as Argentine
capital in 1880.
Alberto Prebisch, one of the main architects of Argentine modernism
was in charge of construction. He also built the Rex theatre on
Corrientes and Suipacha Streets.
White stone from
Cordoba Province was employed for construction. There is only one
access door on the West side which leads up the stairs’ 206 steps
and seven landings before reaching the four windows at the top.It
rises 67,5 Mts., and the Roman style highest end measures 40 cms.
