GOLF TOURNAMENTS
Men Tournaments: the
most important ones are The United States Open for Pros, the US
Amateurs, The Masters by invitation for pros, The PGO Championships, The
British Open and The British Amateur. Women Tournaments: The British
Ladies Amateur Championship, The United States Women?s Amateur and The
US Women?s Open. There are also other international matches, in
principle between the United States and United Kingdom teams but have
been opened to other countries in recent years. The Walker Cup Match,
for amateurs and the Ryder Cup Match, for pros which are men?s
tournaments. This last one is the most famous tournament for teams and
was first played in 1927 with twelve players per country between the
United States and the United Kingdom. At present it is played every two
years and, in 1979 the rules were modified allowing for it to be played
between the USA and Europe. The Curtis Cup Match is played by amateur
women. Some world competitions are the Eissenhower Cup for amateurs, the
World Cup for pros, the Shunnomura Trophy, the Francis H. I. Brown
International Team Match Trophy for seniors. There is also the Espirito
Santo Trophy for women. One of the most remarkable memories in golf
history is that of American amateur player Bobby Jones who, in 1930 won
the Golf Grand Slam, winning The British Open, The British Amateur, The
United States Open, and the United States Amateur. One of the best women
players in history was Babe Didrikson Zaharias an American who played
both as an amateur and a pro.
