                                TOURIST TOURS: LA BOCA

This is how the low area and marshlands where the Riachuelo flows into the River Plate was called. The neighbourhood was founded in 1830 and it was in 1852 when the first Genovese families began to settle, at the same time as the installation of shipyards and warehouses. These immigrants built their houses with whatever material was offered by the port. On stilts, pieces of wood and veneers were joined, and the walls were painted with the leftover paint that was obtained in the port. Therefore, out of need and shortage, arose a very unique aesthetic style portrayed by the famous artist Benito Quinquela Martin in his work, who was a local resident. La Boca also houses the famous soccer club Boca Juniors, whose stadium was inaugurated in 1940.

- Theatrical mural. Almirante Brown 36

It recreates, with objects and drawings, a typical scene of the neighbourhood. Among the characters there are “Bandoneon” player Anibal Troilo, Diego Maradona and the painter of La Boca, Benito Quinquela Martin. It was made by the neighbours of the Theatre Group Catalinas Sur with bars, wood and veneers of a convent that used to be in that place.

- Casa Amarilla. Almirante Brown 401

Brown was a seaman who was raised in a tight spirit so as to be able to overcome adversity. Orphan and uprooted from his native Ireland, he arrived to the Rio de la Plata in 1810, along with his wife and sons (Eliza and Guillermo), both British born. In early 1814, Brown already had his house, located on a 22-hectare piece of land. The building you see today is a replica of the house inaugurated in 1983 as a tribute to the eminent man where the headquarters of the Instituto Browniano works as well as the Naval Historical Studies Department. His house has traditionally been called "the Yellow House" and it is said to have given the name to the whole area.

- Iglesia nuestra señora de los Inmigrantes. Necochea 312

It is a tribute to all immigrants who arrived in the country and in particular to La Boca. It was built with the contribution of immigrants from different nationalities. In its interior, there is a bas-relief of Roberto Capurro.

- Galpón de Catalinas. Pérez Galdós 93

There are plays and musical concerts related to La Boca as well as to Uruguayan culture (in La Boca there are many residents who were born in Uruguay).
