LAS FLORES
General Information
This District is located at the core of the Buenos Aires Province in the region called “Cuenca del Rio Salado”; The region is favored by a temperate, humid climate with regular rains which allow for a wide development of cattle-breeding and agriculture. There are very important, historic estates known as “estancias”) in the rural areas and the natural environment offers great parks, rivers, streams, and canals. Distance from the Federal Capital: 187 kms.
Brief Historical Outline
When
the Governor of Buenos Aires, Don Juan Manuel de Rosas created Las
Flores, the land in close to its totality to belonged to himself and his
relatives. The administration of the district was not based in the
town, which had not yet been founded, but in Estancia San Agustin in the
vicinity of Gorchs. The La Blanca lagoon, today located 2,5kms South
from city centre in those days covered part of the current city.
When
Rosas lost the battle of Caseros his properties were expropriated and 25
March 1856 Manuel Venancio Paz decides to found the pueblo of Las Flores
together with surveyor Adolfo Sourdeaux who defined the city limits.
There were already some houses there but progress in building was slow;
Just before 1860 a temple, a school and a Police Station were built. The
arrival of the Railways gave as usual a great impulse as did the arrival
of a Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires branch, the re-building of
the main plaza, a local newspaper, and electricity. During the 20th
Century, two important textile mills gave an industrial profile to the
city and this lasted until 1990 with the loss of an important number of
jobs. Just as it happened in Pergamino and other cities of the interior
of the Province, many small workshops were opened and created the
Clothing Industrial Chamber of Buenos Aires.
The
University Extension of Las Flores brought tertiary studies to the town
in 1996 and opened the door to agreements with several private and
public institutions. “Indular Enterprises” bought the bankrupt Gatic in
2005 and opened a textile factory in Las Flores.
Tourism in Las Flores
Plaza
Mitre:
This
is the Central Plaza which until 1901 was called Plaza Carmen and was
surrounded by iron bars, had four entrances at the corners and another
four in the central part, with a wooden mill at the centre which gave
water for irrigation and care of the same plaza; the iron bars and the
mill were later taken away and an iron fountain was placed there.
Between 1924 and 1925 the fountain gave place to the monument of Doctor
Domingo Harosteguy and was transferred to Carmen Street. At present the
fountain sits on Rivadavia Street opposite the church. The three
monuments, to Bartolome Mitre, Harosteguy and General Jose de San Martin
can be found here as well as some monoliths, a flag-pole homage to
Belgrano and historic trees like an old camphor, two “palos borrachos”,
two “samohues” and the historic pine from the San Carlos Convent in San
Lorenzo which was brought in 1945.
