BUENOS AIRES City Legislature
Location:
Perú 130-Monserrat
The
architect Hector Ayerza sought to work in a French Academist style Louis
XIV for this building which opened its doors in 1931. The view it offers
is that of a large triangle whose compact outer volume fits the
measures of the plot and it only stands out from other buildings for its
clock tower.
The
front sports Corinthian style columns and balconies level with the main
floor with an epoch balustrade. There are Greek masks over the arches.
The
old municipal coat of arms made in bronze presides over an ample set of
windows. The main gate on Julio A. Roca Av. and Peru St. presents each
of its wooden sections carved and with a large central knocker of forged
bronze with the shape of a lion’s head.
Surrounding the building, on the last floor, there are 26 sculptures
made the epoch’s artists and recreate French classical models linked to
the government of a city. There is also a 95 mts. high tower with an
observatory, 5 bells called La Santa Maria, La Pinta, La Niña, La
Porteña & La Argentina and, a four quadrant clock, a belfry of German
origin with thirty bells varying in weight between 40 kgs. and 4,300
kgs.
In the luxurious interior, a marble Staircase of Honour leads to the
Golden Room which is a copy of the Mirror Hall of the Versailles Palace
in France. This staircase is crowned by a vitreaux sliding cupola
representing the sun that can be operated manually or electrically in
order to see the sky.
