MONUMENT TO BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS
Location:
Entre Ríos Av. with Hipólito Yrigoyen Av.
Located opposite the National Congress; it was built the Centenary of
The May Revolution. It represents the National Assembly of 1813 and the
1816 Congress. The masonry and bronze sculptures were designed by
Belgian architecture Eugenio D’Huicque and sculpted by Jules Lagae, one
of the most prominent artists of this time.
They
were finished in Brussels in 1909 and mounted at the Plaza and unveiled
July 9 1914, receiving criticism for obstructing the view of the
Palace´s main façade. There are allegoric complementary sculptures under
the pedestal. One of them honouring the 1813 Assembly which “abolished
slavery” and the other represents the 1816 Congress which “declared
independence”.
The park bronze statue looking eastwards symbolizes the Republic,
measuring 6,20 mts. of height and bases upon a rectangular pedestal
13,55 mts. high and made of Nancy Stone.
