SAN TELMO
- Esteban de Luca's House. Defensa and Carlos Calvo.
The house was built during the late 18th Century. The poet, military official and journalist Esteban de Luca used to live here. He had had an outstanding performance during the British invasion (1806-1807) as a second lieutenant. The house was recycled preserving the architectural elements from that time. At the moment, there is a restaurant in the premises and the place is a National Historical Monument.
- Mercado San Telmo. Between Bolívar, Carlos Calvo, Defensa and the
Estados Unidos.
Opened in 1897, its facade was made in Italian style and the interior has an iron structure with metal sheet and glass roofs. It has some of the best food stores in the neighbourhood.
- Plaza Dorrego.
Hubmerto 1º, Anselmo Aieta and Bethlem.
It is the second oldest square in the country after Plaza de Mayo. On Sundays from 10hs to 17hs there is the San Pedro Telmo fair, inaugurated in 1970; it brings together about 10 thousand visitors. There are 270 stalls with all sorts of relics and antiques (jewelry, silverware, ornaments, telephones, record players, watches, etc.). In addition, there are the street artists who play melodies and dance tango, in addition to restaurants and bars in the vicinity that put tables on the sidewalks.
- Penitentiary
Argentine museum “Antonio Ballvé”. Humberto 1º 378.
Inaugurated in 1980, displays elements of the Argentine prison system,
as replicas of cells and crafts made by the inmates. It operates in the
former house of spiritual exercises and Jesuit College established in
1740, which retains the Capilla del Carmen. It was then used as a
hospital from the Bethlemita order and a prison for women from 1822 to
1978.
