Tourism in Tandil
The
Centinel
This
strange granite monument is a Geological curiosity which has survived
stardom, history and legend and has become the world famous Moving Rock.
So, this rock distant 6kms from the city centre looking towards the
South is a clear example of a shape acquired from erosion and looks more
and more like a sphere. The core of it is progressively eroded by the
material carried by the superficial waters.
The
area is also a very picturesque circuit where one can take the
chairlift, Aerosillas de Tandil stretching 1,200netres and enjoy a
marvelous view of the city and environs and have a great meal.
“Los
Pibes” Farm
This
is part of the tourist circuit accessed at the El Centinela Hill, zoo,
Historic walk, crafts kiosk and regional products.
Cerro
La Movediza
Just
5kms away from the city, this is the place where the Moving Rock sat,
weighing 400tons and oscillating in balance till 29 February 1912. The
stone path going up the hill can still be used in order to obtain one of
the beat panoramas of the mountain chain.
Cerro
de la Virgen
Driving
along Route 226 for 16kms one comes to the Cerro de la Virgen where the
Lourdes Grotto is located and is an ideal place for a sunset walk. The
outing can be combined with the Movediza due to the proximity between
one and the other.
Santa
Gemma Chapel and Lourdes Virgin Grotto
This
small sanctuary was opened in 1947 and was devoted to Saint Gemma, the
first such sanctuary dedicated to this saint in the Americas. The access
is through three romantic arcades made with artistic architectural taste
which make it into a real treasure. The grotto was erected on the
hillsides and is similar to the original one.
The
Calvary – El Calvario
This
is a good replica of the place where Jesus lived through his passion and
the images of each scene has been as statues showing the 14 stations of
the Via Crucis and are visited on Easter Week year after year by
thousands of the faithful. There is an imposing 22metre cross made of
French marble.
