Location: Balcarse 1 and Avenida de Mayo 525. Montserrat
This building is the seat of the executive branch of the Government of the City (CABA), also called Municipal Palace or Palace of the Head of Government.
This building combining elements of French, Italian and German architecture was designed by architect Juan Buschiazzo and built by the Italian Giovanni Cagnoni between 1891 and 1902. Marble, mosaic and cutglass belonging to a house on Perú St. expropriated from the Zuberbühler family.
During 2005 the original entrance to the Municipal House was found situated at the corner of Bolívar & Av. De Mayo Streets.
Underneath the air chamber of the finest pine floor of an office situated in that octagonal corner, the original floor of the entrance and steps facing street were found intact.
The door was stopped-up with a mud wall and the side sections had been replaced by windows.
A little later, during archeological investigations carried out in the underground floor of the Municipal Palace materials were found which make up an interesting heritage collection of the 18th. & 19th. Centuries.
This archeological collection is one of the most symbolic and finest of urban archeology in the city.
The distinguishing element /component is a series of police badges over a 110 years old and animal bones, glass and ceramics dating from the 18th. & 19th. Centuries.
The archeological rescue team found them in the underground floor of the Municipal House, buried in a room where the remaining parts of a metal safe had been removed in order to build an archive. They have been hidden for over a century after the first headquarters of the department was demolished between 1889 & 1893 to make space for the opening of Av. De Mayo and the building of the Municipal House.
Guided tours: The Golden Room Unit of Culture House offers guided tours to Government Palace in Spanish and English Saturdays at 16.00 hs. and 17.00 hs. And Sundays from 11.00 hs. To 17.00 hs. On the hour.
Between March and November the unit organizes guided tours for schools of all types and levels with previous appointments.
