Each year, takes place many tournaments or championships. The most important for men are: US Open in USA for professionals, US Amateur, Masters (a tournament only with invitation for professionals) , PGA Championship, British Open and the British Amateur. The most important tournaments for women are: British Ladies Amateur Championship, US Women’s Amateur and the US Women’s Open. At first, International matches were also played between teams from the United States and Great Britain, but in the last years the participation was extended for teams from many countries.
The Walker Cup Match (amateur) and the Ryder Cup Match (professional) are for men. The latter is the most famous team tournament; was first played in 1927 between teams of t welve players from Britain and the United States. Currently, held every two years and in 1979 the regulation was changed allowing to be played for teams from the U.S. and Europe.
The Curtis Cup Match (amateur) is for women. Some competitions worldwide are: Eisenhower Cup (amateur), World Cup (professional), Shun Nomura Trophy, Francis H. I. Brown International Team Match Trophy (sénior) and Espirito Santo Trophy.
One of the most famous events in the history of golf was starred for the American amateur Bobby Jones, in 1930, who won the Grand Slam of golf, the British Open, the British Amateur, the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur. One of the best players of all time was Babe Didrikson Zaharias, an American who competed as an amateur and a professional.
