The zoo of Buenos Aires was created over 100 years ago and its located in a central space of the city covering a total surface of 18 hectares and shelters over 2,500 wild animals from 350 different species. It is visited by over three million people every year.
Its architecture are pieces of work that reproduce classic architecture from around the world, thus the entry portal is a copy of the triumphal arch of Titus in Rome, the Palace of the Elephants is a replica of the Temple of the Goddess Nimaschi in Mumbai and also houses many works of art.
October 30, 1888 is considered to be the anniversary of the zoo which has always occupied a prominent place in the social and cultural development of citizens. In olden days, the zoo’s only aim was to provide entertainment or simply present a large collection of animals. Our zoo combines this with other aims such as managing fauna in a controlled environment, doing new studies and research, scientific magazines, international recognitions, having original monuments and corners representing styles from other parts of the world.
The aquarium of the zoo will give you a chance to be close to penguins and diverse sea and river specimens including the fearsome piranhas. You will also be able to see the Argentine sea sharks, devil-fish, sea-breams, black “corvinas”, sea-bass, sea-“bagres”, the beautiful, exotic tropical fish and the funny seals.
Now you are opening the doors to the Heart of the Jungle within the big city…
One of the oldest constructions inside the zoo, formerly the bears home, it became the shelter of the flora and fauna creating the conditions of the Sub Tropical jungle environment. The sound of the cascade, the temperature and the vegetation will submerge you into such a special habitat and help enjoy this adventure of walking in the jungle and crossing the suspension bridge.
The zoo at night
This zoo opens at night so that you can enjoy one more adventure, that of being in the jungle after dark. After sunset the night life animals come to life and it is a magic moment when Nature uncovers some of its secrets.
